FAQs
What is a water softener, and how does it work?
A water softener is a device that removes hardness-causing minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, from water through a process called ion exchange. It replaces these minerals with sodium or potassium ions, resulting in softened water.
What are the benefits of using a water softener?
Using a water softener offers numerous benefits, including: - Reduction or elimination of limescale build-up on fixtures, appliances, and plumbing. - Extended lifespan and improved efficiency of appliances. - Softer, smoother skin and hair. - Brighter, cleaner laundry. - Reduction in the amount of soap, detergents, and cleaning products needed.
How do I know if I have hard water?
You can do a simple test but some common signs of hard water include: - Limescale build-up on taps, showerheads, and other surfaces. - Difficulty lathering soap or shampoo. - Dry, itchy skin and dull hair. - Spots and streaks on glassware and dishes. - Reduced water pressure or flow due to clogged pipes.
Can I drink softened water?
While softened water is safe for most people to drink, some individuals on a low-sodium diet may prefer to avoid drinking water that has been through the ion exchange process. In such cases, it’s recommended to install a bypass valve or a separate line for unsoftened water to be used for drinking and cooking purposes.
Where would a softener be installed?
Generally as close to the rising main (internal stop tap) to minimise install costs, but in reality they can be installed anywhere in a property as long as protected from freezing and accessible to the water supply, drain and power supply.
